Great piece of Toronto history here. This chandelier originally hung in the Queens Hotel in Toronto which is where the Royal York Hotel presently sits. The Queens Hotel was a high end hotel at the time and the chandelier reflects that. When the hotel was torn down in 1927-28, a family acquired it and it hung in their Toronto home until we acquired it a few years ago. After an extensive restoration we are proud to offer it.
The chandelier is signed by F.C. Osler and was made in Birmingham England. Osler was a competitor of Baccarat and made luxurious glassware, furniture and chandeliers with many being made for export to the colonies. This chandelier is all original and was converted to electricity in the early 1900s. We have rewired it since. The shades are American made antique etched ones which makes sense as many chandeliers were sold to be assembled onsite and gas lighting in Canada and the USA was different from that in the UK.
