Lighting Questions

Purchasing

Why purchase from Turn of the Century Lighting?

Having been in business for over 30 years, we offer the widest selection of restored antique and custom reproduction lighting in Canada. Our showroom display is extensive and we consider that Turn of the Century Lighting is unique in the marketplace. Our goal is to continuously offer exceptional value and service.

Do you offer a warranty?

We stand behind our products and will address any concerns you may have.

Do you have a return policy?

We do not have a return policy but do have an approval policy. By allowing you to take a fixture on approval, you can decide if the fixture is right for you. Once a fixture has either been approved or an order has been placed, the sale is final.

Do you work with Interior Designers?

Yes. Please contact us from more information.

Manufacturing and Restorations

Where are the fixtures made?

We have extensive workshop facilities in the lower level of our Toronto showroom. From raw material to finished product, our full service workshop includes a manufacturing, finishing and assembly shop. We also have a small foundry for specialty lost wax and sand casting.

What materials do you use in making your lighting?

All of our custom production fixtures are made out of solid brass.

What manufacturers’ lines do you carry?

We design and manufacture our own exclusive line of traditional lighting which is only available through our showroom or online. We do not carry any other manufacturers’ lighting.

How can I be sure I am buying a real antique?

Our knowledge, experience and reference resources ensure that all antique lighting is labeled with the approximate date of origin, i.e. 1910. We will take the time both online and in the showroom to point out elements that have been altered or have been replaced for CSA approval.

All of our antique fixtures are fully restored with new wiring and sockets installed. Most of our antique fixtures were manufactured of solid brass but we also restore antique bronze, copper, aluminum, white metal and cast iron lighting.

Where does your antique lighting come from?

We have sourced antique lighting from all points in North America and Europe. We purchase from professional antique pickers and dealers, auctions and estate sales. We also personally go out and search the open market for fabulous finds.

Do you buy old lights?

We do purchase old lights but are very particular in what we inventory. If you have a fixture that you are interested in selling, please e-mail us at tocl@surenet.net with photos accompanied by details and a price.

Will you restore or rewire my antique lights?

We restore and rewire fixtures that were made prior to approximately 1940. Please refer to our restorations page to learn more about some of our previous restorations.

I have seen a chandelier in a magazine; can you make it for me?

We offer custom design and commission services. Bring in a photograph or concept, we will show you what we can offer you as a comparison.

Why is CSA approval so important?

The Canadian Standards Association is an independent association which carries the highest set of safety standards in Canada. Because our products meet these standards, they can be installed by certified electricians. This set of standards assures clients that all antique fixtures are restored to code and that all of our lighting meets current electrical requirements.

Alterations

Do you charge for alterations?

We do not charge for standard showroom alterations approximately 36” in length. For custom alterations, please contact us for a quotation.

Do you install switches on your wall sconces?

Yes. Some older homes do not have wall switches and rely on the wall sconces to be switched. Because of this, we offer on/off turn switches which are decorative and match the finish on the sconces. There is no charge for this alteration.

Can the fixtures be adapted for slanted ceilings?

Yes, most antique and custom fixtures can be adapted for slanted ceilings. Please let us know if you require this type of alteration before you place an order.

What type of light bulbs do you recommend?

We recommend quality brass base incandescent light bulbs. They are a higher quality bulb with a longer life span and are the most compatible with our CSA approved sockets. As a standard practice we include light bulbs with every purchase.

You can choose to use compact fluorescent bulbs. Just keep in mind that the light quality will be different from a regular incandescent bulb. Only under very particular circumstances can halogen bulbs be used. Please contact us for further information.

I really like the lighting fixture but the glass shades are not appropriate for my setting. Can I change the shades?

Certainly. Changing the shades on the fixture will change or enhance the style and character of the light.

I saw on of your reproduction fixtures in the showroom but the finish just wasn't right. Can I change the finish?

Yes you can change the finish of any of our reproduction fixtures. Changing the finish substantially changes the demeanor of the light (i.e.from rustic to formal).

Miscellaneous

Will you come to our house for a consultation?

We work with clients directly in the showroom. It is always helpful but not necessary, that clients bring in interior and exterior photos, ceiling heights, colour samples or architectural plans. The ceiling heights are very important as they determine the appropriate fixtures. Our approval policy is the most valuable tool, allowing you to take a fixture home on a trial basis.

Do you deliver?

No, we do not have a delivery service. Most fixtures are easily transportable.

Do you install lighting fixtures?

No we do not have an installation service. Our lighting is CSA approved for installation by certified electricians.

All fixtures mount to standard electrical boxes .We will assist clients with unique situations which can range from older homes with converted gas piping to oversized fixtures.

Please e-mail us with any other questions.
